Introducing: Sara Boccaccini Meadows

Hi Sara,

so good to have you on board! We are super excited about the collaboration with you and the lovely products which you have designed for us! We thought it would be nice to introduce you to whoever doesn’t know you or your work yet. Can you tell us a little about your education? Did you study a creative subject and how did you get into botanical paintings?

I’m Sara Boccaccini Meadows, an Illustrator and Textile Designer living in NYC. I’m originally from the Peak District in the North of England. I studied Textile Design and Surface Pattern at Leeds University in the U.K. I loved my course and found my peers and tutors very inspiring to work around. Botanicals have always featured in my work. At uni I spent a lot of time naturally dying fabric with florals and screen-printing botanical illustrations onto them. This developed a lot over the years but my subject and influence from nature is always there.

You now live in New York but are originally from a lovely part in the UK called the Peak District. Do you think growing up within a National Park influenced your love for nature?

Where I grew up was a small village surrounded by hills. It was so easy to be out the door and quickly surrounded by nature and wildflowers. I don’t think I appreciated it enough when I was younger but now I love the landscapes from my home.

Does living in New York inspire your work in any way as well?

New York inspires me in different ways. The stoops and brownstones of Brooklyn are amazing to see in the different seasons. I love seeing how my neighbors display plants at different times of the year. Also, the botanical gardens and parks in New York give me inspiration. Being able to find a little bit of peace in the city is a real treat.

People, architecture and the general hustle and bustle of the city inspires my work too and often feature in my illustrations.

You seem to be inspired by everywhere you go. We know this because you created a lovely tropical birthday card for us while you were in Hawaii. Do all places you visit inspire you and what trip is on your bucket list?

I feel very lucky to travel and see different cultures and places. I always have my sketchbooks with me and it is a great way to connect with a place. It could just be a quick sketch of some plants or perhaps a larger scene. However, I feel! Hawaii was a great example of this.

I have so many places on my bucket list! Mexico and a cross-country road trip across the states will be next I hope.

What’s your favourite illustration/design within our current collaboration and why?

The Wildflower Peak pattern. It reminds me of home! I did it as part of a video tutorial in the summer, and it features some of my favourite florals- Heather and Thistles.

You also designed some lovely winter themed cards and wrapping papers for us. How are you spending your holidays this year?

I’m hoping to be somewhere warm. I’ve always wanted to go to Mexico – Frida Kahlo is a big inspiration and I’d love to visit her house and museum.

Do you have any exciting projects coming up in the new year?

I have some interesting workshops that I am running, and a collaboration with a Japanese clothing brand. And of course, continuing to travel and paint wherever I can.

We wish you all the best and thank you so much for answering our questions!

A pleasure!
