Nine months ago we went for our first coffee together in Hamburg and now we have finally launched our first card collection together!
Let’s start from the beginning. Have you always loved illustrating and how did you end up being a full-time illustrator?
Absolutely - remember these friendship books we had in school and which were passed around in class for everyone to fill in their personal details?! Recently a friend of mine sent over a picture of my entry back in 1991 and I stated “artist” as what I wanted to be when I grow up! I've always loved painting and messing around with colours and even did my A-levels specialized in Art & Design! Studied Fashion Design and worked as a stylist and freelance pattern designer before now opening up to illustration more and more.
How did you end up drawing so many plants in particular?
To be honest - I just love plants - a lot! Our entire apartment is full of them even though I can't have all of them because of our poor lighting situation. I think that's one of the reasons I started to paint them. If I couldn't have them, I at least wanted to paint them.
I need to ask this - do you have a favourite plant at all?
There are so many beautiful ones! My absolute favourites though are Monstera Delicious (very classic), Anthurium Clarinervium and for sure Begonia Maculata which is also on one of the greeting cards! Love the dots so much!
And do you have a favourite plant to draw?
I love to paint them all - every single plant is so unique and special and it's so much fun to explore all my tools to assemble the right look with the right brushes and textures.
What is your favourite design out of the four new cards we are kicking our collaboration off with?
Oh, I love them all but I think the „You’re amazing“ and the „Cheers to you“ I love a tiny little bit more.
What direction would you like to see your work go in the future?
I would love to also include more figurative drawings and in general, add a little more texture and personal messages!
Is there any advice you have for young illustrators or those who only just starting out?
Keep on showing up! It is really worth fighting through moments of doubt and imposter syndrome - you will get there! Believe in yourself without hesitation and stay patient. Things will fall into place when you keep on working on it.
Thank you so much, Danii, for taking the time to answer a few questions and welcome to the Typoriginal family!
